Workshops available for grades K-4

  • Recipes for Peace

In this three-session workshop students explore diverse understandings of peace. Using free fall writing, activities, and books, students discover that peace encompasses much more than simply a lack of war; it can be found in ourselves, in the classroom, in nature and in the world. Students are introduced to the stories of young people throughout the world who have created peace and are empowered to embark on a similar journey of their own.

  • Expressing Anger

In this three-session workshop, students explore what makes people act out in anger. Through stories, drawing activities, sharing opportunities, and/or visual aids, students are given the opportunity to reflect on the impact of their personal styles of expressing anger, as well as to practice healthy expressions of emotions. Students learn about personal boundaries and the feelings and behaviours that result when boundaries are crossed. The sessions are spread out over a period of time to allow students to practice the skills learned during the program.

  • Bullying

This workshop is three sessions long and includes age appropriate discussions and activities designed to teach students why bullying happens. Students learn what to do if they see someone being bullied, or are being bullied themselves. In addition, positive alternatives to bullying will be offered for students who are participating in bullying behaviours. Emphasis is placed on bystander intervention, and students are given opportunities to practice supporting targets of bullying and intervening in bullying situations.

  • Friendship Skills

The Friendship Skills program is a four-session, once-per-week workshop that teaches students different skills around building and maintaining positive friendships and relationships. The topics discussed include: how to be a friend, communication, demonstrating appropriate behaviours, and problem solving. Though these themes make up the core outline of the workshop, the learning will bridge into other practical areas of each student’s life. The workshop is activity-based, and students are invited to learn and practice the skills being taught through a variety of games and exercises.
